Botox Q & A

Is Botox poisonous?

Botox is a safe and effective treatment that uses a nerve-blocking reaction to prevent some targeted facial muscles from sending signals to the brain. Although it is derived from botulinum toxin A, injections ensure that only specific muscles are targeted. Its effects are long-lasting but temporary.

What does Botox treat?

Botox treats so-called dynamic wrinkles, those lines and furrows that form during certain facial movements like laughing, crying or scowling. Examples include the lines of the brow and forehead as well as crow's feet, those pesky lines that form at the outer edges of your eyes giving skin a “crinkly” appearance when you smile. Botox cannot be used to treat wrinkles that occur as a result of sagging or sun damage since these wrinkles are considered static – that is, they don't form as a result of facial motions.

What is the Botox procedure like?

Botox injections use a thin needle, much thinner than needles used for other types of procedures such as filler injections. The number of injections you need and the placement of the needle depends on the area being treated and the results you're looking for. Most injections will feel like a pinch, and there may be some small amount of bruising, minor swelling or redness following treatment. Most patients quantify the discomfort felt during injections as minimal to none.

How long will my results last?

Botox results usually last from four to six months, after which time additional injections will be needed to maintain results. Many patients report that after regular use, wrinkles treated with Botox will appear less severe even once the effects wear off since muscles have been “trained” to relax.

Can Botox be combined with other procedures?

Yes; in fact, many patients opt to have filler injections at the same time as Botox to achieve a more rejuvenated and refreshed appearance without the need for invasive surgery. Ask Dr. Alessi about other treatment that could help you achieve the results you're aiming for.
