Chin Implant Q & A

by David Alessi, MD, FACS

What problems does a chin implant address?

Chin implants can help improve your profile, making a receding chin appear more prominent and also diminishing the size of the nose by creating a more balanced profile. In fact, some patients considering rhinoplasty (“nose job”) find a chin implant is actually a better choice to provide them with the balance and symmetry they're looking for.

What is the chin implant procedure like?

Chin implant procedures are performed as an outpatient procedure using IV sedation. Most procedures take about a half hour to perform but the length of your entire procedure can vary, based on whether or not you're having other procedures performed at the same time. Have someone available to drive you home and, ideally, stay with you the first night following the procedure.

What is the recovery process like following a chin implant?

After the chin implant procedure, most patients report some discomfort which can be managed with prescription or over-the-counter pain medications. Swelling, bruising, and redness may also occur, all of which usually resolve within one or two weeks. After 10 days, concealer can be used to hide bruising. You can expect to return to work within about a week after your procedure.

What are chin implants made of?

The material depends on the manufacturer. Dr. Alessi will discuss the implant options as well as the materials they comprise of during your consultation and evaluation appointment.

Can a chin implant be performed at the same time as other procedures?

Yes; in fact, chin implants are often performed at the same time as neck lifts, facelifts, or rhinoplasty to provide better definition for the entire lower face area. Dr. Alessi can discuss your options with you so you can get the best results possible.

I'm a guy; can I still shave?

Yes; while you're wearing a dressing during the immediate post-op recovery period, you can shave around the dressing. Once the dressing is removed, the area can be shaved along with the rest of the face using a manual razor. After about 10 days, an electric razor can be used if desired.
